The designer inside Potterton Books
Kimberly Stevens wrote a delightful piece in The New York Times, profiling glamorous Kelly Wearstler’s favorite design bookstore, Potterton Books, a miniscule, one-of-a kind gem (and ArtsÉtoile favorite) surrounded by expansive showrooms inside West Hollywood’s Pacific Design Center.
Wearstler credits the rare and out-of-print books that she finds at Potterton Books as the inspiration behind some of her best design projects. Despite her busy schedule, she always finds time to peruse the resource-filled books for fresh ideas, frequently finding colors and patterns that haven’t been used in decades and giving them new life in today’s eclectic interiors. Wearstler admits that she “never set(s) monetary limits on books… to (her) it’s like collecting art.”
I couldn’t agree more that collecting beautiful design books is a fabulous way to enrich your visual vocabulary without breaking the bank. Collecting hard-to-find art and design books is a smart and wise alternative to collecting actual art and design in lean economic times.
